ボーカルのイアンカーティスは、この曲の発表を待たずに自殺してしまったので、彼の事実上の遺作となった。
イアンは19歳でデボラと結婚し、公務員として働きながら家庭を築いていた。
しかしバンドが成功しつつあり、その期待と熱狂が高まっていく中で持病のてんかん発作が悪化し、抑うつも深まっていく。
ライブでは発作を起こすことも多く、発作を抑えるための薬は離人感や現実感の喪失といった副作用をもたらし、彼をさらに追い詰めた。
生活は徐々に崩れ、精神的な苦しみと混乱から逃れるように浮気をしてしまう。その裏切りによって夫婦、家族関係は崩壊していった。
そして、アメリカツアーへ旅立つその当日の朝、追い詰められたイアンは自ら命を絶った。
彼の歌詞からは、病気によって急速に壊れていく自分の精神や、その精神不安による自己喪失が刻まれている。
特にCeremonyの歌詞からは、制御不能に陥っていくなかで犯した過ちへの後悔と懺悔、そしてデボラへの愛と自分への決別が記されている。
彼は、混乱の中で守れなかった愛の重さに耐えきれず、全てを終わらせてしまったのではないか。
僕にも、その気持ちが痛いほどわかってしまうから、この歌詞を読むと涙が止まらなくなる。
