Japanese well-being has several distinctive characteristics. In Japan, people tend to be modest when evaluating their own happiness, and even when living conditions are stable, many hesitate to say that they are “very happy.” Rather than actively pursuing strong positive emotions such as joy or excitement, happiness is often associated with the absence of anxiety, conflict, or major problems, and with a sense of everyday stability.
In addition, well-being in Japan is rarely experienced as something purely individual. It is closely connected to relationships with family, colleagues, and social groups, and to the feeling of being useful or fulfilling a role within these contexts. While Japanese people generally show a strong sense of responsibility and role awareness, their self-esteem tends to be relatively low, and they are cautious about explicitly describing themselves as happy. Overall, Japanese well-being can be understood as a quiet form of happiness, grounded in stability and harmonious relationships rather than in intense positive emotions.

Happy New Year! I recently caught up with friends from my University of Sydney days, and when we got onto the topic of relationships, it was fascinating to see how preferences for men vary by region.
My Korean friend said she prefers guys with idol-like looks but with some muscle definition; my Australian friend shared that they don’t prioritize looks as much and value a sense of responsibility more—though unlike in Korea, they’re drawn to a physique closer to that of a bodybuilder. Meanwhile, my Eastern European friend placed more emphasis on height and intellect…
As a foreigner, I’m quite curious: what qualities do Japanese women/men typically value most in a romantic partner?

What was my life in 2025?

It was a transition, like being in a cocoon. Almost suffocating. I became obsessed with a thin strip of sunlight slipping through a crack in that tiny shell. I called it hope. I called it a future.

And now, as 2025 ends, I’m choosing to tear through that old skin and step into the wild with nothing but my own wings.

Why?

Just to breathe fresh air. Just to feel alive on my own terms, with my own freedom and responsibility.

That’s what I want more than anything now.

Good fcking bye, 2025.
