たとえば「まっすぐ行って」は
👉 Go straight が定番だけど、
日本語の感覚だと「少し進む」くらいでも言うのに、英語だと straight は「曲がらずにそのまま」ってかなり強いニュアンス。
だから Go straight for about 100 meters みたいに 距離を足さないと不親切に聞こえることもある。
「角を曲がる」もややこしい。
👉 Turn right / Turn left は簡単だけど、
「2つ目の角を右」になると
Turn right at the second corner なのか
Take the second right なのか迷う。
後者はアメリカ英語っぽくて、慣れてないと一瞬わからない。
それから「道を渡る」。
日本語だと一言で済むけど、英語だと
👉 cross the street（横断歩道を渡る感じ）
👉 go across the road（向こう側に行く）
と、どこに重点を置くかで表現が変わるのが地味に難しい。
「〜の隣」も要注意で、
👉 next to は物理的にぴったり横、
👉 near は感覚的に近い、
👉 in front of は「建物の正面側」なのか「目の前」なのか文脈依存。
日本語の「前」は万能すぎるから、英語にするとき一瞬止まる。
あと個人的に悩むのが「少し先」。
👉 a little further
👉 a bit ahead
👉 just down the street
どれも「少し先」だけど、話し手の距離感が違う。
just を入れると一気に「本当にすぐ」感が出るのも面白い。
結局、道案内の英語って
単語そのものより、相手の頭の中に地図を描けているかが大事なんだなって思う。
