で、the mercuryに？？？となった。マーキュリーと言えば水星しか知らんぞ？と思ったけど、水星で使う時はMercuryと大文字で。小文字の時は「水銀」の意。それが「the mercury」とtheがつくことで「温度計」という意味で使われるらしい。
このtheのニュアンスが分かりづらくて、世の中にあるたくさんの水銀の中で、気温の文脈で使われてるから温度計という意味になるらしい。違和感あるが、この辺が日本語にはない
冠詞のニュアンスなのかなあ。
