The final season of Stranger Things was released today on Netflix. The first four episodes are available now. The rest will be so on the new year’s eve.

I think Stranger Things has been one of my family favorite series all the time since its first season. I don’t remember when the first season was released exactly. Maybe that was before 2018 when my sons were still quite little. The series brings back a lot of memories of our family time when we together binged episodes day and night.

It’s sad to see such a great show come to an end, but every story has to have an end.

The characters of the show, who were all early adolescents at first, must have fully grown up and become adults. In the previous episode, they didn’t look like the age the characters were supposed to be: Their bodies were no longer of kids. I miss naughty kids making so much drama in the show. I wonder how they look like in the final season.

I’ll be binging the episodes over this weekend.

Kids’ Emo Dev

According to Dr. Gross at Stanford:
“Getting rejected or put down literally shrinks a kid’s brain”

When kids keep hearing negative stuff,
their prefrontal cortex (the part that controls thoughts and emotions) slows down and their amygdala gets super reactive.
So yeah…
kids who keep getting criticized
start reading ppl’s faces way too much and do things just to avoid getting yelled at.
Then they end up living not for themselve but for other ppl.

That kinda people-pleasing habit turns into an invisible chain as they grow up like after puberty when they become adults.
They start caring too much about others’ opinions.
SNS reactions,
their boss’s evaluation,
Everything’s based outside themselves,
so no matter how hard they try,
they never really feel safe or at peace.

Kids’ Emo Dev

According to Harvard’s Dr. David:
“Low self-esteem doesn’t just pop up outta nowhere.”

When a kid starts saying stuff like
“whatever I’m useless,” it ain’t sudden.
It’s the result of all the lil negative memories stacking up in their heart.
Test scores, forgetting stuff, friends drama…
Every time someone’s like
“Why can’t you do this?”
or “Did you mess up again?”
Those tiny words of disappointment pile up and…
Their heart quietly gets hurt and their trust in themselves gets chipped away bit by bit.

Kids are way more sensitive than adults think.
They react more to disappointed looks or sighs than actual words.
Kids judge love more from facial expressions and tone than from the words themselves.
So no matter how correct the words are when you correct them…
If they sense an “I don’t accept you” vibe, it turns into a stamp in their heart saying “I’m no good.”

📗 JP Slang no.7: エモい(emoi)

Gibraltar Life’s survey on “Slang Young People Use That Adults Don’t Get” ranked this Jap slang no1.

It’s pretty much the symbol of Gen Z slang rn.
When something hits your feelings…
when it’s just freakin’ nice in a way you can’t explain… that’s “emoi.”
People use it for music, scenery, love — that kinda stuff.

It originally comes from the English term “emotional.”

“The sunset hits different — so emoi”

“Too emoi, straight-up youth vibes”

It’s the kinda word that just slips out
when your heart moves, y’know?
