“What’s ‘ディスる’ short for?”
Had zero clue… so I peeked at the answer—

全く分からず答えを見ると
Turns out it comes from “disrespect.”
Didn’t click right away, but yeah, makes total sense.
Basically, it’s the verb form of disrespect, like rejectin’ or just straight-up dissin’ someone.

言われてみれば確かに
“否定する” “けなす”って意味の
disrespectを動詞化したものなんだって
The article also said it’s kinda negative, like talkin’ trash—so probs best not to overuse it.

It’s a hip term that’s caught on with younger Japanese crowds. It’s often used when something doesn’t make you laugh right away but becomes funnier the more you think about it.
特に若い子達の間で飛び交ってる今時の言葉ね。考えてるとクスッと込み上げてくる感じの時に使うみたい。
It seems to come originally from ‘じわじわくる’ (meaning ‘it slowly gets to you’).

E.g.

In situations where you don’t quite get it at first but it gradually becomes more interesting, the Japanese slang ‘ジワる’ might sometimes be used in a way that carries a similar nuance to the expression ‘It grows on you.’
「最初はピンとこなかったけど、だんだん面白くなってきた」って状況だと、「ジワる」が「It grows on you」のニュアンスに近い表現として使われることもあるみたい！
