There are so many things I want to say to people—small disappointments, quiet frustrations, moments when I wished they had noticed something was wrong. Yet the words stay where they are, trapped somewhere between thought and speech. Everyone seems busy, distracted, already occupied by their own concerns. By the time I consider saying anything, the moment has passed, and the conversation moves on as if it never existed.
What makes it worse is the growing suspicion that nobody is particularly interested. Not in any dramatic sense, not out of cruelty, just simple indifference. The kind that comes from people having their own lives, their own priorities, their own circles. Days can pass without anyone asking a meaningful question. Weeks can pass without anyone wondering how things are really going. It is a strange experience to be visible and invisible at the same time.
Millions of people move through the streets every day. Trains arrive full and leave full. Cafés are crowded. Lights fill every window. Conversations overlap in every direction. Yet somehow the density of people only seems to magnify the distance between them. Surrounded by thousands of lives, I feel like a spectator watching everyone else belong somewhere.
There is a particular loneliness that only exists in crowded places. It is easy to imagine that solitude in a remote cabin would feel lonely, but at least there would be honesty in it. This feels different. This is standing in the center of everything and feeling absent from it. It is hearing laughter from nearby tables and feeling no connection to any of it. It is walking through illuminated streets while feeling as though nobody would notice whether you turned left, right, or disappeared entirely into the crowd.
Sometimes I think the city is a machine built to keep people moving. Everyone has somewhere to go, someone to meet, something to do. The only thing it does not seem designed for is stopping long enough to truly see one another.
Meanwhile, entire conversations continue inside my head, addressed to people who will never hear them. Questions remain unasked. Feelings remain untranslated. The distance between what I think and what I say grows wider, while the distance between me and everyone else somehow grows wider too.
And the city keeps glowing, crowded and awake, as if none of it matters at all.
